A built-in memory storage system present in every modern computer and laptop is hard drives. Hard drives follow non-volatile storage stream while other one being volatile memory (ex. RAM, VRAM, etc.). A common hard drive consists of a rotating disc storage which is connected to laser reader and a motor engine. Working of hard drives is not very different from that of a CD/DVD. The only difference is that a hard drive is not easily portable as it is a completely sealed unit.
SanDisk, Western Digital and Transcend are world’s leading hard drives manufacturers. There are two wide types of hard drives available in the market-portable/external and internal. While internal hard drives are available for use with desktop computers, portable hard drives are suitable for desktop PCs as well as laptops. A portable hard drive is smaller in size than a regular internal hard drive and is more efficient for secure data transfer.
While regular hard drives provide sufficient data transfer speed, special applications may even require higher speeds. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are available for suiting their requirements as these SSDs provide a lightning fast 1GBPS+ data transfer speed under suitable conditions.
Hard drives are available in various memory storage capacities ranging from 80GB to 2TB. For special purposes, even higher storage hard drives are available at reasonably high costs. Power consumption of a hard drive is based on various factors such as usability and form factor. While compact hard drives require less energy, SATA is known for energy efficiency.
