Wireless router: Performs the function of both router and the wireless access point
A wireless router is in fact a network device that performs or delivers the functions of a router but also simultaneously includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly and highly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network and there is no need for a cabled connection. It can function or perform in a wired LAN (local area network), or in a wireless only LAN, or sometimes in a mixed wired or wireless network. However, the most current and latest wireless routers have the following characteristics features like:
LAN ports in a wireless router functions in the same manner as the ports of a network switch, while in case of a WAN port, it offer the connection to a wider area network. The routing functions are every time filtered using this port. If it is not properly used, many functions of the router will be bypassed. There is also wireless antenna which allow connections from other wireless devices like NICs or better to say network interface cards, wireless access points, wireless repeaters and wireless bridges. A wireless router is just a simple router with a wireless interface. Sometimes a wireless router could be a regular IP router when coupled with an 802.11 interface card and antenna added to it, or sometimes it could be a router specifically designed for wireless use. Almost all the wireless routers in many cases act as firewalls, switches, and sometimes provide Network Address Translation (NAT).
