The various types of keyboards

In computing, the keyboards are an important input device. They are partially modeled after the typewriter keyboard, which uses the arrangement of buttons and keys, in order to act as mechanical levers or electronic switches. The keyboards generally contain characters, which are engraved or printed on the keys. And if you press any of the keys, it corresponds to a single written symbol. On order to produce some symbols, you may require to press and at the same time hold several keys simultaneously or in a particular sequence.  Most of the keyboard keys produce letters, numbers or signs or characters, while other keys or simultaneous key presses can even produce actions or computer commands.

There are five types of keyboard:
Standard keyboards: The traditional keyboards contain 101 keys. It contains alphabetic characters, punctuation symbols, numbers and a variety of function keys.

Laptop size keyboards: Keyboards for laptops or notebook computers normally have shorter travel distance for the keystroke as well as a reduced set of keys.

Gaming and multimedia: These keyboards have extra keys, and some special keys for accessing music, web and other frequently used programs. For an instance, ctrl+marked on color-coded key is used for some software applications and for some specialized uses video editing.

Thumb-sized: These smaller keyboards were especially introduced for laptops, PDAs, cellphones or the users, who have a limited workspace.

Numeric keyboards: These keyboards contain only numbers, like mathematical symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, a decimal point, and several function keys.
