The buttons of a PC mouse
A pc mouse is a pointing device, which functions by detecting two-dimensional motion which is relative to its supporting surface. Physically, a pc mouse consists of an object to be held under one of the user’s hands, with one or more buttons. It also features other elements, like the wheels, which allow the user to perform various system-dependent operations, and the extra buttons or features can also add more control or dimensional input. The pc mouse’s motion typically translates into the motion of a pointer on a display, which may allow for fine control of a Graphical User Interface.
A pc mouse’s buttons have changed little over the ages, varying mostly in shape, number, as well as placement. Engelbart’s first mouse had a single button while Xerox PARC had three buttons but later they reduced the count to two for Xerox products. After experimenting with four-button prototypes, Apple reduced it back to one button with the Macintosh, while Unix workstations from Sun and others also used three buttons.
Apple offer single-button mouse, while most other platforms used multi-button mice. Apple and its advocates promotes single-button mouse as they are more user-friendly. They also promotes multi-button mouse as confusing for beginners and that the multiple button mice interfaces introduce computer accessibility restrictive elements including right click, double click, and middle click. However, a multi button mouse is developed by X Window System applications. This pc mouse promotes simple operations like ‘cut and paste’.
